Why the Drain Only Smells After You've Been Away
Under every floor drain and sink there's a U-shaped pipe called a P-trap. It holds a little water to seal off sewer gas and odors from coming back up into the room.
When a space sits unused for days or weeks, that trapped water evaporates and dries out, the seal disappears, and odor flows up freely. That's why condos, rentals, holiday homes, and rarely-used bathrooms smell worse than bathrooms used every day.
The Real Fix — Refill the P-trap
The good news: you can fix it yourself in a minute, no plumber needed.
- Run water at every drain — flush the toilet, run the basin tap, and pour water into the floor drain so every trap is refilled.
- Pour about half a litre into the floor drain — the most forgotten spot, and the number-one source of the smell.
- Leaving again for a while? Add a splash of cooking oil to the floor drain; a thin oil film slows the water from evaporating.
Once refilled, the smell fades within minutes to a few hours as the water seal blocks the gas again.
While You Wait — Why Cut Limes Aren't the Answer
A common old trick is placing halved kaffir lime or lemon in the bathroom. It smells fresh at first, but:
- It rots fast — within a day or two it wrinkles, molds, and becomes a new smell of its own.
- It looks untidy — cut fruit in a guest bathroom makes the room feel unpolished.
- It fades quickly — needs frequent replacing and more upkeep than you'd think.
